Happy OT Month!

by Cheryl Hall on April 14th, 2024

For OT month, I am celebrating occupations!

Occupational therapy improves patient access to the occupations and their ability to participate in occupations.

What does OT mean by occupations?  Any skill a patient needs for the job of living is an occupation!

Adaptive Sports – Buttoning –  Cleaning –  Driving –  Food Prep –  Eating – Gardening –  Handyman Skills   Ice Skating –  Jigsaw Puzzles –  Knitting –Lovemaking – Managing Meds – Nature Access – Online Shopping Personal Hygiene – Quilting – Reading  – Sleeping- Transfers – Uno & Cards – Visiting Friends – Writing- Xiangqi & Games – Yoga – Zippers

OT goals begin with the occupations important to the patient and result in those occupations being more manageable.  The occupational therapy happens in between:

  • Patient-centered assessments of impairments and functional limitations
  • Clinical knowledge of disease and disability
  • OT Intervention, adaptations and modifications
  • Patient and caregiver education

OT provides a patient-centered path to strengthen skills for the job of living.

The volume and variety of occupations is what makes OT such a fun, creative and dynamic healthcare profession.  So celebrate OT month by focusing on the outcomes – the skills needed to live life to the fullest – achieved with the help of occupational therapy.
