OT Challenge – Give Back October

by Cheryl Hall on June 15th, 2017

Love giving back to your community?

Enjoy spreading the word about occupational therapy?

Consider celebrating World Occupational Therapy Day by partcipating in the Occupational Therapy Global Day of Service on October 27, 2017.  To quote the OTGDS website: “As an occupational therapy practitioner or occupational therapy student, you are the best ambassador for promoting the work of our profession”.   So get out into your community and use some of your OT talents to give back this October.

Your day of service can be an individual effort or you can involve fellow OTs, classmates and peers.  Be sure that you register at http://promotingot.org/ to document your impact on this day, and talk about it on social media.

I haven’t decided how I am going to volunteer that day, but I’m considering a couple of possibilities!

  • As a certified assessor, I could volunteer for a local Car Fit
  • Since I am passionate about falls prevention, I could volunteer to give a talk at a local senior center.
  • I could support the work of organizations like Habitat for Humanity or Christmas in April as they rehab homes for elderly and disabled. These organizations need an Occupational Therapist to conduct a Safety Assessments prior to rehab.
  • I could contact my local high school guidance counselor and volunteer to talk about Occupational Therapy careers at the school’s next career day.
  • Check out the OTGDS website for great ideas from past years.

I would love to hear from you.  How will you celebrate the 2017 Occupational Therapy Global Day of Service?
